Buidling Dreams Together

Following Inter Miami’s latest win, Lionel Messi has set the record for most goals in the Leagues Cup.

Inter Miami defeated Charlotte FC 4-0 in the Leagues Cup quarterfinals. Lionel Messi set a new record with his goal.

Despite having only appeared in a few matches for Inter Miami, Lionel Messi already holds the club record for most goals scored in the competition.

On Friday night, Miami faced Charlotte FC in the quarterfinal of the Leagues Cup. Gerardo Martino’s team won 4-0, securing their place in the competition’s semi-finals.

Messi sealed Miami’s victory by scoring the final goal of the contest in the 86th minute. Josef Martinez scored the game’s first goal from the penalty spot. While Robert Taylor doubled it before Adilson Malanda nearly put the game away with an own goal.

Miami will now face Philadelphia Union. A rival from Major League Soccer, in the competition’s semifinal. The match will be played on August 15 on a Tuesday. The winner will face Monterrey or Nashville SC in the championship game.

Interest in the MLS and the clubs has grown since Miami acquired Messi. The legendary player from Argentina joined on a free transfer after his deal with Paris Saint-Germain expired.

Messi’s games thus far have all taken place in the Leagues Cup. Later this month, he is anticipated to make his MLS debut. However the specific match depends on how the team is doing in the current competition.

Messi scored against Charlotte for the eighth time since joining the team. The goals came in just his fifth outing. Messi has thus surpassed the previous record holder for the League Cup’s all-time leading scorer.

Striker Bongokuhle Hlongwane of Minnesota United previously held the mark with seven goals.
