Levi Colwill could bring back glory to the Number 26 shirt at Chelsea

Levi Colwill ended discussions about his future as he signed a six-year contract with his boyhood club Chelsea FC. The 20-year-old put up impressive performances in his loan spell with Brighton and was highly appreciated by the club manager and the board. However, the Blues were confident that they needed his services and had seen enough from him to offer a long-term contract. With Wesley Fofana out for a significant amount of time and Benoit Badiashile injured, this move was necessary to establish some depth in defence for the club. Throughout the summer, Levi Colwill continued impressing the football world with his stellar performances for the England U-21 squad. The defender was rock solid and helped the Young Lions claim the European U-21 championship.

One of Levi Colwiil’s biggest attributes is his intelligence on the ball. Aged 20, Colwill has shown great composure with the ball at his feet from defence. All of this certainly has helped him create a great impression on Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino. The club released the official squad number list just last week, Colwill was given Jersey number 26 for the 2023-24 season. The number 26 holds a special place in the hearts of Chelsea fans as it was former captain John Terry’s jersey number. This clearly indicates the trust the club has in Colwill as a player.

Colwill will be the key defensive piece in Pochettino’s system

Levi Colwill has already shown his ability on the defensive end in the Premier League. He was a key part of the fantastic Brighton squad, who love playing out from the back. Chelsea as a team will certainly try and use that ability of Colwill and try to build out from the back. Considering the injuries at the back, Colwill is expected to start a majority of the games this season. He is a young player and has already shown that he is set to match the intensity of playing in high-tempo games.

Playing alongside Thiago Silva is something that will help Levi Colwill massively. The youngster has heaped high praise on the Brazilian and stated that his impact on the club is massive. Both Silva and Colwill have great ball-playing abilities. This gives Chelsea another boost as they can now create another attacking option, which will add a lot of pressure on their opposition. The English defender is also not someone who can get bullied by big strikers. He stands at 187 cm and will definitely be a tough player to get by.

With no European competition lined up for the club, Colwill has some time on his hand before he faces the other big clubs outside England. However, the club will be competing in domestic competitions and are going to be at loggerheads with the other Big 6 teams. Although Colwill has already played them, this time it will be at Chelsea, which means that all eyes will be on him every time he takes the field for the club.
