Blackburn Rovers’ troubles increase as Jon Dahl Tomasson’s exit looks imminent

Blackburn Rovers have been in the news for the past few days and not for the right reasons. The club failed to complete the signing of American striker Duncan McGuire from MLS side Orlando City, citing failure to send the right paperwork before the deadline. This has enraged the fans as it was the third time in a year that the club had failed to sign a player due to similar reasons. McGuire could have been the player to help the Rovers get back some momentum as he had scored 13 goals in the MLS for Orlando City.

Blackburn are currently placed 18th on the table with 33 points and are only 5 points from dropping into the relegation zone. To add to their misery, their manager Jon Dahl Tomasson is expected to leave the club as he has been approached by Sweden to take over their head coaching position. The Danish coach has been vocal about the state of the club and asked to be released in the summer, but the management refused to let him leave. However, after yet another disappointing transfer window, Jon Dahl Tomasson’s exit from Ewood Park looks inevitable.

As per reports, former Birmingham City manager John Eustace is set to take over the reins of the club from Tomasson. Although the news has not been confirmed, all formal talks are done and it is believed that Eustace could be soon announced as the club’s new manager.

Blackburn Rovers have not won a Championship game since beating Bristol City 2-1 on December 12, 2023. They have had dominant displays in the FA Cup games against Cambridge and Wrexham, but their Championship form is worrying. John Eustace’s first game in charge could be against Stoke City, who themselves are coming into the game on the back of a 5-0 loss handed to them by leaders Leicester City. He could give the fans something to cheer about as the last few weeks have been disappointing and have led to them slipping lower in the standings.

Eustace’s stint at Birmingham is well-documented. He led the club to their best-ever points tally since 2016 during the 2022-23 season and helped them stay in the championship. Following that, he started off the 2023-24 season well, by helping them secure 18 points which had them placed sixth on the table. However, he was sacked abruptly by the management.

Since sacking Eustace, Birmingham has fallen to the nineteenth place and are only four points above the relegation zone. His arrival at Ewood Park certainly comes at a turbulent time, but the English coach is well versed with the Championship. His experience of playing and coaching at this level will certainly come in handy for the club as they look to make a resurgent run to finish the season on a high note.
