PSV Win in the Eredivisie as Ajax vs Feyenoord Abandoned

Ajax’s suspended match against Feyenoord dominated the Eredivisie this weekend, as PSV, AZ and Sparta Rotterdam pick up vital wins.

Feyenoord went to Amsterdam and were leading 3-0 when Ajax’s fans disrupted the game and caused it to be suspended.

I covered the match in more detail here, which leaves Ajax in 14th place and Feyenoord still with a perfect record despite the abandonment, so how did the other matches play out and how well did my predictions go?

PSV went back to winning ways with a comprehensive victory against Eredivisie debutants Almere.

Goals from Guss Til and Hirving Lozano in the first half set up a comfortable win where Almere had just two shots on target in the 90 minutes, and later goals from Joey Veerman and Ricardo Pepi added the cherry on top.

It means PSV have five wins from five games and sit top, ahead on goal difference, whilst Almere have fallen to the bottom of the table.

Striker Luuk de Jong has four assists in the league, joint top with teammate Joey Veerman, and it was de Jong who set up Veerman for his goal.

PSV are the top goal scorers in the league with 17 goals and conceded just one, a league lowest.

Sparta Rotterdam sealed a 1-0 win over Vitesse which could prove vital in the push for a European place come the end of the season.

A sixth minute goal by Arno Verschueren earned all three points, in a game where Vitesse failed to get a foot in despite their 51% possession.

It means Sparta move up to fifth whilst Vitesse sit just above the relegation play-off spot.

AZ’s three goals to the good means they keep up the pressure on PSV at the top, but PEC’s loss has seen them plummet down the table as the league’s worst movers.

Mayckel Lahdo got AZ off to the perfect start after 13 minutes, but it would be in the second half when goals from Myron van Brederode and Vangelis Pavlidis added to the tally.

It is the best result AZ could have asked for after their disappointing collapse in the Europa Conference League in midweek and which is the remedy for a continued push for a third title in their history.

PEC are down to 11th having picked up one point out of six in recent games.

However, it is a different story for Twente as they lost their perfect start with a 1-0 reverse against RKC.

A last-minute goal from on-loan Manchester City winger Filip Stevanovic steals three points and moves RKC out of the relegation zone and up to 13th.

Twente sit third and will hope to bounce back in their next fixture.

The Other Fixtures

There were also wins for Excelsior away against Heerenveen where former Tottenham striker Troy Parrott scored his first goal for the away side. Excelsior moves into the top half of the league as the biggest movers of the matchday.

Go Ahead Eagles also won 3-0 on Friday when they hosted Fortuna Sittard in a game with 41 shots between the sides but just 11 on target.

NEC beat Utrecht 3-0 and FC Volendam and Heracles played out a 2-2 draw, meaning Volendam are off the bottom of the table.

It means my predictions from the eight games played sees me pick up two perfect results (two points) for the PSV and AZ wins, and three half-points for correct results but incorrect scores, so I finish with 3.5/8 (and if the match wasn’t abandoned, I’d have four points).
