McTominay gives Man Utd a late win at Aston Villa

Manchester United earned a vital win in their push for Champions League football next season thanks to Scott McTominay’s late header.

It was the away side who took the lead after 17 minutes. Harry Maguire nodded down Bruno Fernandes’s corner into the path of Rasmus Højlund who was able to tap home from inside the six yard box. This was the Danish strikers 11th goal for the club and his sixth in his last 7 games.

The home side responded well and forced Andre Onana into making some important saves to deny Villa.

Victor Lindelof replaced Luke Shaw at half time for United and the away side struggled to play out with as much ease.

Aston Villa were finally able to break through. Andre Onana made a good save following a Villa corner but the ball came out to Moussa Diaby who drilled the ball into Douglas Luiz who turned the ball home.

The home side continued to press but were unable to create any clear openings.

United re-took the lead with just 4 minutes of normal time left to play. Kobbie Mainoo did well to find Diogo Dalot who’s excellent first time cross was headed in powerfully from substitute Scott McTominay which sent the travelling fans into delirium.

Despite the 6 minutes added time, the away side held on to earn the 3 points. United have now won their last 3 games and have moved to within 5 points of Aston Villa and just 6 points of Spurs in 4th place.
